Treatment Planning & Target Sequencing Based on the Latest Memory Research

Treatment Planning & Target Sequencing Based on the Latest Memory Research
$295.00

This workshop consolidates the latest memory research centering the basis for EMDR treatment planning and target sequencing on core maladaptive beliefs (CMBs) which undergird symptoms and presenting issues, as purely focusing on symptoms and presenting issues may be ineffective. Live demonstration of EMDR Phase One incorporating unique CMB-related forms, and supporting scripts round out the training day.

Workshop Abstract

Adhering to EMDR fidelity in the eight phases does not  consistently lead to full symptom relief despite an accurate case formulation. Why?

The conceptual difference between extinction and memory reconsolidation tells us that purely issue-driven EMDR target sequencing does not necessarily erase the manifestations of early maladaptive self-schemas (aka: negative cognitions (NC)s) formulated over thousands of conditioning experiences from early infancy (sensorimotor neural networks) throughout life’s Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) experiences (diverse panoply of engram neural hub traces distributed throughout the brain).

From the lens of the AIP model, early implicit memory formation is the foundation for core maladaptive beliefs (CMBs) that are linked throughout the brain and are not explicitly considered as presenting issues. These CMBs undergird symptom production and presenting issues which are resistant to change.

When Past, Present, and Future Prong incidents are purely centered around symptoms or presenting issues, CMBs which predate symptom production (along with disturbing incidents that appear to be distal to the symptom but are tied to the CMB in the client’s unique AIP) may largely be left out of the reconsolidation process.

Thus, Past, Present, and Future Prong incidents may be cleared, yet the symptoms and presenting issues themselves may not be fully remitted. This course consolidates the latest memory research laying the foundation for treatment planning and target sequencing based on CMBs using the lens of the (AIP) model, attachment theory considerations of implicit memory formation, and trauma-related dissociative presentations. Live demonstration of EMDR phase one incorporating unique CMB-related forms, and supporting scripts that assist in treatment planning and target sequencing round out the training day.

Learning Objectives

  • 1

Summarize the process of memory engram encoding, retrieval, and natural forgetting.

  • 2

Describe the neurobiological underpinnings and functional brain connectivity of both the implicit and explicit memory systems, and explain how this relates to the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model.

  • 3

Distinguish the key differences and similarities of implicit and explicit memory systems.

  • 4

Describe the neurobiological function and survival value of traumatic memory formation and maintenance prior to psychotherapeutic intervention.

  • 5

Specify the underpinnings of attachment formation in the implicit memory system.

  • 6

Explain the process of trauma/stress-induced dissociation via the lens of the implicit memory system.

  • 7

Express how the vestibular and somatosensory systems and their functional manifestations are compromised in PTSD.

  • 8

Cite several current methods of brain research that shed light on DSM disorders.

  • 9

Describe how a bottom-up approach to addressing PTSD in EMDR phase two addresses cerebellar processes of threat prediction.

  • 10

Discuss why purely issue-driven treatment planning and target sequencing in EMDR therapy often leaves symptoms incompletely remediated.

  • 11

Complete forms and select scripts specifically designed to address core maladaptive beliefs which undergird presenting issues as part of EMDR treatment planning and selection of target sequencing.
